Steve Dale conducts a short interview to Patricia McConnell, animal behavior expert of international merit. In this video, they both discuss dominance over dogs as a method of training, and why it is not recommended. Or, in Steve Dale’s words, “motivation works better than intimidation”.

Adolescence is here!

I lived for some years with an Estrela Mountain Dog breeder. This is a breed o f livestock guarding dogs, selected over time to act independently from people. This breeder’s dogs in particular were still quite close to working stock. At the time, I used to have a joke for our “clients” who bragged about their 4/5 month-old puppy being very obedient, sitting and lying down on cue, etc. I would tell them “if your dog still does that when he is 2 years of age, then I will be happy for you”! ;)

The “sad” reality is that even if a puppy is very dependent on people and will do anything to try to please them, sooner or later (depending on the breed type) the dog will reach its adolescence… A time in which, just like with human kids, the world seems to be turned upside down, the dog seems to have forgotten all that he learned and can basically turn into a “rebel”. The good news is that now all dogs go through this stage in such a profound way and… sooner or later they will come out of it! :)

Chegou a adolescência!

Vivi durante alguns anos com um criador de Cão da Serra da Estrela, uma raça de cães de protecção de rebanhos, seleccionada ao longo dos tempos para actuar de forma independente das pessoas. Os cães deste criador em particular estavam ainda bastante próximos dos cães de trabalho. Na altura, costumava ter uma piada para os “clientes” que nos vinham gabar que o seu cachorro de 4/5 meses era muito obediente, sabia sentar-se e deitar-se à ordem, etc. Costumava dizer-lhes “se o cão ainda fizer isso aos 2 anos, então aí sim, ficarei satisfeita consigo”! ;)

A “triste” realidade é que se um cachorro é bastante dependente das pessoas, e tudo tentará fazer para as agradar, ao longo do crescimento, mais cedo ou mais tarde (consoante o tipo racial) o cão irá chegar à adolescência… Um período em que, tal como ocorre nos adolescentes humanos, o mundo parece ficar virado de pernas para o ar, o cão parece esquecer-se de tudo o que aprendeu e basicamente poderá vir a ser um “rebelde”. A boa notícia é que nem todos os cães passam por esta fase de uma forma muito pronunciada e… mais cedo ou mais tarde acabam por sair dela! :)

Os cartoons abaixo “traduzem” de forma simples o significado de alguma da linguagem corporal dos cães, e indicam os erros mais comuns quando abordamos os cães (principalmente cães desconhecidos).

Vídeo sobre como abordar um cão com medo de pessoas, pela Dra. Sophia Yin. A técnica usada no vídeo poderá ser difícil de aplicar se o cão não ligar a recompensas alimentares, mas é também uma questão de tentar identificar o que mais motiva o cão. Infelizmente, normalmente é mais difícil conseguir a cooperação das pessoas que o cão encontra do que propriamente dessensibilizar o cão.
